Holiday Season in Southern California

holiday-events-around-southern-california-2022

It is finally the time when we can get together with family and friends to enjoy the holiday season in SoCal. If you’re looking for something to see, check out this list of festivities you attend throughout the Southland.

Night of Lights (November 25, 2022 – January 1, 2022)

You don’t have to leave your car to enjoy more than a million lights at the OC Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. You’ll drive through a mile of animated light shows, themed scenery, snow flurries, and tunnels backed by special effects, music, and interactive characters.

Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (November 26 – December 24, 2022

While you’ll find many versions of this holiday classic playing around Southern California, none will be quite like the South Coast Repertory (SCR) offering, which is in its 42nd year. Among the cast of veterans like Richard Doyle as Scrooge are 16 young performers divided into two teams of eight that alternate performances. All these youngsters have completed at least two years in the SCR Theater Conservatory.

Kuumba Kwanzaa Celebration (Dec. 17, 2022)

Celebrate the Kwanzaa principle of creativity, known as Kuumba, at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. The event is free, but you’ll need to RSVP for three hours of interactive storytime with puppetry, songs, and tales. You’ll be able to show off your Kuumba spirit in a zine workshop. Feel free to bring images and materials from home that are meaningful to you.

Hanukkah Festival (Dec. 18, 2022)

You can visit another Los Angeles institution, the Skirball Cultural Center, to attend the Hanukkah Festival, which brings together a holiday photo booth, latkes and jelly donuts, hand-crafter torch-making, dance, and a puppet theater performance. When the sun goes down, you can take part in community candle lighting.

New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade (December 31, 2022)

If you want a white holiday, you can head to Big Bear, which is hosting its 58th Annual Torchlight Parade on Snow Summit. It’s free to watch over 200 skiers and snowboarders light up the face of the mountain as they make their way down with torches. The event starts at 7 PM and continues right into 2023. Naturally, lifts will start at 8:30 in the morning so that you can enjoy a full day on the slopes.

Snowtopia (December 3, 2022)

You don’t have to head for the hills to experience winter powder if you go to Snowtopia in Garden Grove. Your admission buys unlimited rides down nine slides crafted with 50 tons of snow. You’ll also enjoy a holiday craft boutique, local entertainment, themed photo areas, and holiday treats. The event reaches its zenith at the lighting of a 24-foot fully decorated tree with an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Cruise of Lights® (Dec. 16 – 23, 2022)

Because the Beach Boulevard of Cars is located in Huntington Beach, our favorite event is the Cruise of Lights®, which livens up the night with narrated boat tours through our local waterways. You’ll marvel at the lights and animated displays that decorate boats, decks, docks, and homes.

Aquarium Holidays (December 3 – December 23, 2022)

After making merry above the water, why not check out how the creatures under the sea do it at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach? Its Aquarium Holidays features themed décor throughout the facility, snowfall in the Great Hall, and cheers from Santa Diver. The festivities also include Hanukkah storytelling and a Kwanzaa celebration.

Enjoy the holiday events, then come shopping at Beach Boulevard of Cars.
