Did your weather forecast mention extreme heat warnings? If this is your week for an epic road trip, how will the higher temperatures affect your car? Is it a problem?

How does high heat affect my gas-powered car?

If you are heading out to attend Coachella or bolt up to Las Vegas, you may be driving through a desert where temps can reach up to 110 F during the day. That extreme heat will negatively impact your older battery by potentially boiling off fluid and minimizing its ability to start the engine.

If your tires are underinflated, the high temperatures may cause uneven wear, which can result in a flat tire or even a blowout on the freeway.

In an older vehicle, the aged coolant in your radiator may not be able to maintain a safe operating temperature in the engine. This may lead to overheating and damage to the pistons.

Finally, when you park your car in the sun on a blinding hot day, the fuel in the lines can begin to vaporize. This may lead to vapor lock, which can cause misfires in the engine and damage expensive components.

Having your battery, tires, and coolant checked before you hit the road and park in the shade whenever possible is wise.

Does an EV lose efficiency during a heat wave?

While an all-electric vehicle will lose up to 30% of its range when the thermometer reads below 25F, it will actually perform close to EPA estimates when you are enjoying a classic beach day in the 80s.

However, when you get into the 90s, it will lose up to an estimated 17% of its range. This is due to using more battery power to run the air conditioning and keep the cabin cool. Extreme temperatures over 100 F will start to lower the battery’s ability to produce power.

Just like its gas-powered cousin, you also need to check the tire pressure to prevent any heat-related damage.
