Does it ever feel like your world is crowded with stop lights and stop-and-go traffic on the 110 Harbor Freeway? When you are ready to shake off the smog and honking horns, plan an epic off-road escape in beautiful Southern California.
What kind of SUV or truck do I need to go off-road?
Despite the highlights of the Baja 1000, many different SUVs are equipped to do some soft-roading. Your Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V with all-wheel drive comes with the minimum 6 to 8-inch ground clearance needed to power over rutted dirt roads. Any compact or light-duty pickup featuring 4-wheel drive, like the Nissan Frontier or Chevrolet Colorado, is also prepared for fun in the sun. Of course, a Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or Subaru Outback with X-Mode are all familiar rides with loads of capability. Your sedan or hot hatch is better suited to maintained roads in national parks or proven rally courses.
Where can I camp on the beach in SoCal?
Host your beach blanket party at Oceano Dunes, located just a few miles south of Pismo. It’s the only spot on our rugged coastline where you can power over the sand, set up a campfire, and sleep in your Chevrolet Silverado bed.
Remote Mountain Vistas at Your Doorstep
Perhaps you live where the waves wash up on the sand and want to breathe in crisp mountain air. Escape the city bustle when you drive to the Santa Ana Mountains and take the Main Divide trail. The fire road is a great spot for first-timers as the trail is maintained for fire vehicles. Check the weather before you go, as it gets closed during active fires or heavy rain events.
Old Mines and Remote Lakes
California is just bursting with a huge variety of history and scenic escapes. Drive east of San Bernardino into Bear Lake, check in at the ranger station, and push the limits of your Jeep Gladiator in Holcomb Valley. Always ride with your buddies, as there is no cell coverage in this beautiful but remote area. Discover abandoned mines, towering pines, dry creek beds, and the scent of a living forest.
Racing the Dunes
Are you up for the off-road party of a lifetime? Bring along your RV and dry camp with thousands of other off-road enthusiasts at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area. A huge array of activities are available. Try out your crawl mode in your Jeep Wrangler Rubicon or push the limits of your Toyota Tacoma TRD while jumping dunes or clambering over boulders. Pack in all your supplies, including fuel, as the small town of Glamis has few stores.
The Beauty of the Open Desert
Where can you wallow in a wide open landscape dotted by the iconic Joshua tree while speeding along dry lake beds? Like Glamis, the Johnson Valley OHV Area, located 50 miles south of Barstow, is controlled by the Bureau of Land Management, and there is little to no infrastructure nearby. But that leaves miles of red canyons, hidden valleys, and dry peaks to explore. Call ahead to check on military training exercises. The area closes at those times for your safety.
Plan for a Fun and Safe Off-road Adventure
Before you escape the city lights of Los Angeles for your vacation, make sure your truck or SUV is ready for rough riding. Schedule an inspection with your service center at the Beach Boulevard of Cars and check your suspension, skid plates, filters, tires, and transmission for wear and tear. Tell your family and friends where you are heading and when you should return.Â
We look forward to seeing you where the pavement ends!
